Performer, pedagogue, choreographer and director, Iliana S. Babadjanova, graduated Cum Laude from the Sofia National School of Dance Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria. During the last two years at the school she was selected to perform in the corps de ballet with the National Ballet and Opera Theater. Upon graduation she joined the company, where she danced for eight years.
Ms. Babadjanova was the recipient of the highest award at the prestigious 1990 Bulgarian National Competition “Anastas Petrov”. In 1991 she was invited to teach ballet, coach and choreograph for the junior sport and rhythmic gymnastics teams in Ascoli Piceno, Italy. Upon her return to Sofia in 1992, she was appointed as a teacher's assistant at the Sofia National School of Dance Arts.
That same year, she rejoined the National Ballet and Opera Theater as a soloist. Her repertoire includes major roles in Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker, La Bayadere, Giselle, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliette, La Dame aux Camélias, The Hunchbacked Horse, Zorba the Greek, Aida, Carmen, Prince Igor, Boris Godunov, Khovanshchina, La Traviata, and many other operas and ballets. She had the honor to work under the direction of internationally renowned choreographers and directors, Irina Kolpakova and Yury Grigorovich with who she toured extensively throughout Europe and Asia. In 1995 she was invited to perform with the D’Opéra Teatro Lirico d’Europa for its international tour throughout France and the United States.
Ms. Babadjanova is a very knowledgeable and skilled pedagogue, specializing in the Vaganova ballet technique. Her expertise ranges from ballet technique, pointe, variations, partnering and classical repertoire.
From 1994 to 1997 along with her full-time performing career, Iliana became the Head of the Dance Department at a Performing Arts Center.
In the United States Iliana taught classical ballet at the Florida Dance Center, Dance & Circus Art of Tampa Bay, On the Edge at Frank Ray Dance, Florida West Ballet and Clearwater Classical Ballet. As ballet faculty at Dance & Circus Art of Tampa Bay, Iliana was featured in Dance Teacher Magazine. She has choreographed and staged the productions of Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Tin Soldier, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, La Bayadere, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Raymonda, Peter Pan, La Fille mal Gardee and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
